Is the progressive left dying out? Has the momentum started to get stuck in the mud? Over the past half-century, this army of committed leftists has elected longtime Democratic Party officials, forced the national organization to adopt a more Leninist tone, and advanced a host of policy positions that would not have seen the airy of day a decade ago. These progressives were noisy and energetic; they were the emerging wing of the party. Now their charge across the American landscape appears to be slowing. As in the case of the German armies after Operation Barbarossa, is the climate changing to their disadvantage or not?
There are many reasons to suspect that progressivism in the Democratic Party has reached its peak. The police defense and the critical political pressure of this left-wing party cadre did not work. Even non-white Democrats in cities rejected ballot initiatives aimed at defunding the police. To the surprise of his leftist sect, being pro-crime doesn’t appeal to voters. San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin has been removed from her job because of his gentle approach to crime. Both Axios and The Hill have published articles detailing the depreciation of the value of running for a progressive brand in elections (via Hill): :
Progressive players suffered two major blows from the primary this week that could have given them a much-needed boost of momentum just a few months before the midterms. Instead, they failed again, giving moderates more reason to say voters prefer a middle-of-the-road approach, especially in the Midwest battleground.
The biggest takedown came when Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.), a pro-union powerhouse in the lower house, lost re-election to Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) in a redistricting that pitted the two incumbents against each other for the first time.
Progressive players took this loss especially challenging.
“This failure is heartbreaking,” said Leah Greenberg, a leading activist and co-founder of the group Indivisible. “Not only because of the resolve and conviction Andy Levin brings to Congress as a progressive champion, but because it is a deeply disturbing demonstration of how dark money conservative billionaires can manipulate our broken political system.”

The Liberals also saw one of their most promising rising stars, Lucas Kence, a teenage Marine veteran, lose to moderate Trudy Busch Valentine in the Missouri Senate primary. Valentine was seen as the establishment candidate for the general election and narrowly won a majority of the vote.
When progressive heavyweights like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) support a lower vote race, which should aid move the needle, at least in theory. Conventional political wisdom suggests that endorsements alone do not usually sway voters, but they can provide a helpful stamp of approval in close contests. Look no further than House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) famously tipping his hat to Biden during the 2020 presidential primaries.

In several races that drew national attention — from Ohio and Michigan to Missouri — Sanders, Warren and Ocasio-Cortez offered support to progressives over moderate challengers, sometimes physically showing up to stand on their behalf. Sanders and Warren campaigned for Levin in Michigan, while Ocasio-Cortez made a last-minute endorsement of the former Ohio House candidate Nina Turner, who lost to Rep. Shontel Brown (D-Ohio) earlier in the cycle.
I don’t know what to believe. The reasoning is sound. There seems to be a massive groundswell of opposition to the continued experiments of the progressive left because they are steeped in aberration. They seem more focused on exposing school children to the problems of being trans or gay. Gender identity needs to be mentioned xx-number of times to maintain their “woke” credibility. The left wants teachers to spread false academic materials in the classroom, such as those relating to critical race theory and the 1619 Project. The Green New Deal is the epitome of pie in the sky. Everyone talks like university lecturers, which is not conducive to reaching voters widely.
When it comes to issues of race, the progressive left is far from the mainstream in terms of intensity. Even non-white Democrats know this is America, not apartheid South Africa. Things may be steadily improving on the race relations front, but everyone sees significant progress on these issues. The days of Jim Crowe are long gone. At some point, the ideological rigidity of the progressive left will show itself, especially since the ranks of the “woke” are overwhelmingly white, affluent and affluent. Wealthy white liberals are taking over the agenda-setting aspects of the Democratic Party at the expense of non-white Democrats who are not as left-wing but have been the backbone of the party for decades.
However, there is something worth remembering: the current media is poison. Matt Taibbi had a great reputation for these people; they are the “kings of sucking”. The more they say something, the more often it is met with disbelief or skepticism. The more the liberal media tells us something is happening, especially when it comes to election coverage, the more likely voters are to rush to the opposite position. It was said that Donald Trump was a clown and a frivolous candidate for president in 2016. The media added that people are now paying attention to Trump; he will run out. You all remember these headlines. Trump easily won the Republican nomination and became the 45th presidentvol President of the United States.
I wouldn’t be surprised if all this depressing news about the supposed end of the left is set to set the stage for a massive progressive surge if Joe Biden decides not to run for re-election. What a boon that would be for this site. The media has been wrong about a lot of things lately, and while some say there is no successor, I say you all are grossly underestimating Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She will be eligible to become president in 2024, when she will be 35 years venerable before the inauguration. She has all the qualities of a national candidate and the resources to make this happen. Whether she will make it to the finish line is another matter, but the materials needed to organize a nationwide campaign have been available for a long time.
Most of the Democratic Party’s representation in Congress comes from the coasts and cities, areas that are hotbeds for the progressive left. The growing number of electoral defeats and lack of support are partly due to the fact that this type of policy is completely unpopular outside the snobbish enclaves of liberal America. These people are not the majority. It’s not even close, but they’re more focused on being right than looking for broad appeal and leadership.
