John Cornyn brutally booed at the Texas GOP convention over the gun control bill

On Friday, Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn learned the tough way that Republicans in his state aren’t fans of him working with Democrats on gun control legislation. While appearing at the Texas Republican Party convention in Houston, he took the stage to boos from true Republicans who had gathered to run their party’s affairs.

According to video from the convention floor, the vocal opposition to Cornyn continued in his remarks:

Additionally, the Texas Republican Party Platform Committee unanimously passed a resolution Thursday condemning last weekend’s bipartisan framework for fresh federal gun legislation announced. They also punished Republican senators who sat at the negotiating table with Democrats and continue to collaborate on a plan to finalize legislation that would likely restrict Second Amendment and due process rights for law-abiding firearm owners.

Among the senators reprimanded is Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who led GOP members in a group working to craft a legislative package in response to the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

Here is a resolution condemning the negotiations and rebuking Republicans who have gone along with the Democrats’ reactionary push for more legislation, as reported according to the Texas Scorecard on Friday:

Resolution against the Gang 20 gun control bill.

However, people under 21 are most likely to be victims of violent crimes and therefore most likely to have to defend themselves.

In contrast, “red flag laws” violate the right to a fair trial and constitute a pre-crime punishment for people who have not been found guilty.

And waiting periods to purchase weapons harm those who need to obtain self-defense measures in emergencies such as riots.

While all gun control is a violation of the Second Amendment and our God-given rights.

We reject the so-called “bipartisan gun deal” and admonish Senators John Cornyn (R-Tex.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Bill Cassidy (R-Tex.), Susan Collins (R-Tex.), -Maine), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).

The resolution comes up during the Texas GOP convention as Second Amendment advocates become increasingly concerned about what Democrats will try to include in the final bill, using the cover of partial GOP support to make the effort appear bipartisan.

Even the framework, hastily announced last Sunday, was problematic for its apparent plan to encourage red flag laws in states and create a nationwide “extended” inspection period for buyers under 21 years of age.
