Background: Hickenlooper he graduated He earned a master’s degree in geology and a bachelor’s degree in English in the 1980s from Wesleyan University. He worked as a geologist and later opened restaurants across the country, such as Wynkoop Brewing Co. in downtown Denver, Colorado. Political positions
- Healthcare: The Denver Post Office wrote that “Hickenlooper has been cautious about adopting a single-payer system and other public options,” even though the candidate stated that maintained the general concept of single-payer healthcare. Former Governor proposed expansion of Medicaid coverage due to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He too he worked with Ohio Governor John Kasich on a series of plans to overhaul the health care system. These included “maintaining the individual federal mandate, streamlining bureaucracy, and basing health insurance costs on family finances.”
- Immigration: Hickenlooper signed a 2018 executive order preventing Colorado resources from being used to separate undocumented immigrant children from their families.
- Environment: Hickenlooper he said he didn’t read the entire Green New Deal bill, but added: “I assume that 99 percent of the provisions of the Green New Deal I will happily accept.” Although a former governor he worked to tighten regulations on methane production in Colorado, he also opposed issues related to a ballot measure aimed at increasing the minimum distance that oil companies can drill from schools, parks and residences.
- Economy: Hickenlooper ordered state agencies to check and streamline unnecessary regulations in 2011, reducing 2.3 million work hours annually and saving $8 million. He too adopted an apprenticeship program for high school students called CareerWise and collaborated with Microsoft to create Skillful, a website designed to facilitate displaced workers find fresh jobs.
- Criminal justice: Hickenlooper paces back and forth opinions about the death penalty. He changed his mind on this issue after 2013, when he initially believed that, from a biblical perspective, the death penalty provided an eye-for-an-eye for convicted murderers. Regardless of his change of opinion, the former governor never signed or supported a bill that would have repealed the practice.
- Gun Control: Hickenlooper signed three laws regulating the purchase and possession of guns in his state. The regulations included universal background checks for online and private gun purchases, as well as a ban on magazines containing more than 15 rounds of ammunition. The bills passed through the legislature without a single Republican vote.
- Miscarriage: Hickenlooper supports abortion and Planned Parenthood, but The Denver Post Office She notes that she prefers to highlight her efforts to prevent teen pregnancy, such as when in 2014 the state launched an initiative to provide 30,000 inexpensive or free contraceptives.
Criticism/controversy:
- Pro-oil policy: Hickenlooper defended oil drilling and fracking in Colorado. Axles reported that “Anne Lee Foster, organizer of a ballot initiative that would significantly restrict the state’s oil and gas development, said Hickenlooper would not have the support of many progressives in the state because of his outspoken support for the industry.”
