Lawmaker warns Democrats they view D.C. voting law as a roadmap to get foreigners to vote nationwide

House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., warns that Democrats want to operate Washington’s voting laws as a roadmap to get foreigners to vote in all 50 states.

“Other municipalities across the country not only allow foreigners to vote in local elections…..[they] in fact, they are using taxpayers’ money to encourage foreigners to vote in our elections,” Steil said on the TV show Only news, no noise TV special sponsored by the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC).

The District of Columbia has a law that allows people over 18 years of age – foreigners or Americans – who legally reside in the city for more than 30 days to vote in local elections, according to “Democracy Document”..

The Local Residents Voting Rights Amendment Act 2022 was challenged in court in 2023, but the judge dismissed the suit.

“So a person who works at the Russian embassy who is a Russian citizen… if he has lived in Washington for 30 days can come to a polling place in November and vote in the municipal elections,” Steil said. “So they want to use Washington as a petri dish and roll it out across the country.”

Steil, whose committee oversees election integrity issues, said that while it is illegal on paper for illegal immigrants to vote in U.S. elections, it does happen.

“It’s about law enforcement [and] on preventing individuals from engaging in illegal activities… that’s why we moved the SAVE Act through my committee to make sure that we require people who register to vote simply to prove that they are United States citizens,” he said.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE) requires proof of citizenship to vote in elections. In July, the House passed the SAVE Act, with five Democrats voting for it.

“This is common sense legislation and there is no reason why the United States Senate should not take it up,” Steil said. “The U.S. Senate should take up this immediately and we must work together to make sure U.S. elections are for U.S. citizens only.”

Over the past few years, the issue of election integrity has made headlines as Americans have drawn attention to concerns about election insecurity.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said his state has made some changes to better secure future elections.

“In Georgia, safety is my top priority,” Raffensperger said in the special report. “We will ensure free, fair and quick elections.”

He explained that Georgia recently implemented a law stating that absentee ballots must be received no later than 8 p.m. on election night.

“We are probably expecting about five people [or] maybe six percent of all voters in Georgia chose to vote by mail,” he said. But about 60 to 65% will actually vote early. Therefore, the total number of all votes will be announced by 8:00 p.m. We think it’s a good thing.”

Some GOP leaders speculate that the reason Democrats are unwilling to do much about election integrity is because they want illegal immigrants to vote in order to change the election.

“I think it’s pretty clear that one of the tenets of the Democrats’ 2024 playbook was to turn all illegal immigrants crossing the border into voters,” Election Integrity Network President Cleta Mitchell said during the special.

Mitchell was referring to the Help America Vote Act, which was passed in 2002 and introduced reforms to the way Americans vote.

“The Help America Vote Act requires that an individual’s identity and residency be verified before being added to the voter rolls,” she said. “Guess what’s missing from this list? Citizenship.”

She mentioned that the SAVE Act is essential and should be passed by the Senate since it had already passed the House in July.

“It’s a really big threat and the more we bring it to the forefront, the more awareness there will be,” Mitchell said. “People should watch their DMV and local election office programs and find out, ‘What is happening in your community that is keeping non-citizens from voting?’”
