House Republicans Want to Impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein

Well, House conservatives are fed up with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. It’s the boiling point of a months-long fight between Congress and the Justice Department over the release of documents. The Justice Department has reportedly failed to comply with subpoenas for documents related to the firing of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails and alleged abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Some 1.2 million pages of the requested documents have yet to materialize. In April, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes threatened to impeach FBI Director Chris Wray and Rosenstein for failing to turn over a two-page summary that allegedly established collusion between the Kremlin and Trump’s team in the 2016 election.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is now leading the investigation. In May, The Washington Post reported that the House Freedom Caucus had drafted articles of impeachment as a last resort. Last night, due to continued delays from the Justice Department, the articles of impeachment were drafted. Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC), the leader of the House Freedom Caucus, revealed his reasons on social media (via Fox News):

A group of 11 House Republicans filed five articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday night.

The impeachment articles accused Rosenstein of intentionally concealing documents and information from Congress, failing to comply with congressional subpoenas, and abusing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

The articles were introduced by Representatives Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Jim Jordan of Ohio, the chairman and prominent member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

In an interview Wednesday night on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” Meadows said it would be possible to pass a so-called “privileged” resolution to impeach Rosenstein as early as Thursday morning, which would require a vote within two days — though the upcoming House recess would likely delay that vote if it didn’t happen quickly.

Both Meadows and Jordan told host Laura Ingraham that such an effort was overdue.

“We’ve been asking for documents for nine months, and that’s all we wanted,” Meadows said. “Not only have the requests been ignored, but information has been suppressed, and efforts have been blocked.”

“We caught the Justice Department hiding information and redacting information that it shouldn’t have redacted,” Jordan charged, adding that Rosenstein tried to intimidate House staffers with subpoenas.

Yes, those reported threats by Rosenstein to GOP staffers and House lawmakers came in June. It was a typical government exchange, with the deputy attorney general saying he could subpoena documents from people investigating him. That added to the drama. Democrats went wild, noting that this was an attempt to derail the special counsel’s investigation into possible collusion, even though Rosenstein had told President Trump he had nothing to worry about with that investigation. Talk is affordable, and Rosenstein, despite telling the president, was ready to get a termination notice from the Trump White House, showing no regrets about how he had conducted himself as DAG.

In principle, yes, the Justice Department has been ridiculous in releasing the documents — and GOP lawmakers are rightly frustrated, but the impeachment theater could bring more headaches and energy to progressives already pumped up by the fever of resistance to the 2018 midterm elections. We’ll see what happens. One thing that will happen, which will be humorous, is that the liberal media will have another crisis. We may already be a dictatorship… in the minds of those at MSDNC and others. It depends on what drug they’re on at the time.
