Former President Donald Trump has been teasing another presidential run in 2024 for some time, a potential rematch of the 2020 presidential election if President Joe Biden were to run again. Trump’s teasing became more explicit over the summer, even before the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago in August, and speculation has certainly grown since then, based on the possibility that being targeted in such a way would further motivate Trump.
Has Donald Trump given the clearest signal yet — without a formal announcement — that he’s running? It’s possible! There have been some rumors about whether Trump will announce a decision before the midterm elections, which are just five days away, and mixed feelings about whether that would be a good idea or not. While he has yet to formally announce, Trump may have sent the clearest signal yet, as his Save America PAC released multiple emails Thursday highlighting polls in which he would be ahead in 2024.
A poll conducted in Nevada last month run by Rasmussen Reports and the Capitol Resource Institute show Trump leading by double digits, 49 percent to Biden’s 37 percent. The poll was conducted Oct. 13-17 among 707 likely Nevada voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Trump’s advantage in Nevada is particularly telling, considering that he lost in that state both 2016 AND 2020Nevada did not vote for a Republican president since 2004when then-President George W. Bush won re-election.
Then there’s the Ohio poll, also from last monthby the Institute for Civics and Public Policy (ICAPP) at Ohio Northern University. A majority, 53.64 percent, said they believed Trump would win in such a rematch between him and Biden in 2024, and an even larger majority, 55.40 percent, said they wanted Trump to win.
Additionally, a majority (46.49%) said they would like to see Trump run again in 2024, while another majority (35.60%) said they “strongly support” a 2024 rematch between Trump and Biden.
“Many would like to see a Biden-Trump rematch because they believe Trump would win if it happened.” Robert Alexander, Ohio Northern University is quoted partly as written in the survey report.
The poll was conducted Oct. 11-15 among 668 likely Ohio voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
Trump won Ohio in both 2016 AND 2020winning 51.7 percent of the votes and 53.3 percent of the votes, respectively.
Trump, however, must win the Republican primary, which is likely to include Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL). SAVE America PAC also emphasized September poll from Premise Data, which showed Trump far ahead of the rest. For the 2024 election, Trump is ahead of Biden 51 percent to 49 percent. The poll was conducted Sept. 2-5 and included 1,572 respondents.
How writing down from the distinguished assumption:
- There was little change in Premise Poll respondents’ preferences for potential 2024 Republican presidential primaries. 64% support Trump’s re-nomination, four times more than support for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (15%).
- Former Vice President Mike Pence trails in the Premise Poll with 7%.
Trump isn’t the only likely candidate being watched to see if he runs. There have been rumors and doubts about whether Biden would run at all, and the president himself suggested during an interview with “60 Minutes” in September that he might not. Will he do it or not? Pressure mounts on Biden to make decision after election“, read Amie Parnes’ headline in The Hill on Sunday.
If Trump runs again against Biden in 2024 and wins, he wouldn’t be the only president to serve two nonconsecutive terms. Grover Cleveland won in 1884 but lost to Benjamin Harrison in 1888. He promised to return in four years and did, winning even more electoral votes in 1892 than he did in his 1884 rematch with Harrison.
