Ohio newspaper accused of racism after mocking JD Vance and his Indian-American wife

A major Cleveland, Ohio, newspaper is facing a wave of criticism after printing a political cartoon targeting Senate candidate J.D. Vance (R-OH) at the expense of his Indian-American wife.

The Plain Dealer, which endorsed Vance’s opponent, Tim Ryan (D-OH), published a cartoon depicting Ryan in a Cleveland Guardians uniform, formerly known as the Indians when not everything had to be politically correct, and Vance in a San Francisco Giants uniform with a quote bubble above his head.

“The only American Indian name change I support is changing my wife’s name to ‘Senator J.D. Vance’s Wife,’” reads a caricature of Vance, referring to Cleveland’s previous name, Indians.

In an interview with Fox News, Vance criticized his former opponent Matt Dolan, whose family owns the baseball team, for the name change, accusing Dolan of pandering to the “woke crowd.”

In the article, political cartoonist Jeff Darcey said, “So don’t expect to see J.D. Vance in a Cleveland Guardians uniform. He’s more likely to be in a San Francisco Giants uniform. Vance moved to the city by the bay, where he made millions of dollars as a venture capitalist, wrote his bestselling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, and met and married his wife, Usha, a lawyer at a San Francisco-Washington, D.C. law firm. Usha Chilukuri Vance is Indian-American.”

“The editors of the Cleveland Plain Dealer published a cartoon that clearly encourages intolerance toward Indian women, perpetuating a stereotype,” Jai Chabria, Vance’s chief strategist, said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Tim should immediately come forward and condemn their actions, and maybe this racism is okay because it’s directed at a Republican,” Chabria continued.
