Democratic Senate candidate ready for his party to move away from President Joe Biden, insisting ‘new leaders’ take over Washington
In an interview, Tim Ryan (D-OH) said Biden should not seek re-election in 2024, adding that it was time for a “generational change” on both sides of the aisle.
“I think we need new leadership across the board, Democrats and Republicans alike,” Ryan said when asked if he thought Biden should run again.
“I think it’s time for a generational movement of new leaders on both sides. I think the political environment across the country is poisonous and, you know, people, I think, want some change and I think that’s important for us in both parties,” he continued.
Ryan has claimed to be campaigning as an “independent” and has made efforts to distance himself from Biden. When asked why he didn’t welcome Biden to Ohio, Ryan said he wasn’t “really asking anyone.”
“Well, I’m not really asking anyone… I’m not one of those guys who’s like, ‘Oh, I need someone to come and help me.’ I’ve done it, I know what I’m doing, I know what I believe in, I know where I’m coming from, I know who I’m fighting for. I don’t need anyone to break that news to me,” Ryan said.
Explaining why he is running as an independent, Ryan said there are issues he agrees with and opposes both Republicans and Democrats on.
“Well, I’m running as an independent, really… I’ve agreed with Trump, for example, on trade with China, I’ve agreed with Trump on renegotiating NAFTA, a strong defense, a space force, General Mattis, those things, but I’ve also opposed Democratic presidents on really bad trade deals, along with Sherrod Brown. So I really want people to know, look, I’ve run against Nancy Pelosi, I’ve gotten into fights with Bernie Sanders, I’ve fought Democratic presidents on trade, and I’ve agreed with Republicans on what I think is good for Ohio,” Ryan explained.
Until now, Ryan has stood by Biden, even though he has argued he should no longer be in the White House.
