Bill Maher’s Stark Warning to Democrats in 2020

Yes, he criticizes Republicans. Yes, he’s on the Hollywood left, but he’s not the type to pander to the authoritarian ethos of political correctness, he knows that the Boycott, Sanctions, Divestment movement is absurd, and Maher isn’t afraid to criticize radical Islam. He also knows that if the Democrats are too crazy, they’re going to burn their hopes for 2020. I mean, the silver lining is that Maher thinks far-left extremism is a cancer on the Democratic Party when it comes to winning elections. But like a lot of things Maher says, he can make a great argument, only to bury it in something stupid like “I hope the economy crashes because Trump has to lose.” That’s disgusting. Maher’s a affluent guy. It’ll be fine if the economy goes into recession. Millions are going to suffer. Even when the right sometimes did this under Obama, I found it disgusting.

Even more disgusting is the Democratic agenda for 2020, which does not have a single position that is popular with Americans. Even health care, an issue on which the Democrats hold the cards, is being undercut, not because the GOP has a better plan—they don’t—but because these leftist clowns are pushing Medicare for All, which will result in massive tax increases for the middle class while destroying private health insurance. The debate is not about whether the idea is too costly. It’s about whether to gut the 100 million or so health plans now or later. Decriminalizing border crossings is another proposal, along with health care for illegal immigrants, taxpayer-funded abortions up to the moment of birth, gun confiscation, massive tax increases, and a concerted effort to defraud the country by suggesting the economy is a disaster while also saying the current boom is Obama’s doing. You can’t have both. First, that last part is not true. In the end, while Maher may like some of the ideas from 2020, he knows the winning message. So do you. Anyone who follows current events knows it. A mighty economy, low taxes, and job creation will always beat more government regulation any day of the week. That’s the wake-up call Maher fired off earlier this month (via RCP):

[Warning: some strong language]:

“Most Americans aren’t tired of winning,” he said. “They’re tired of looking at his fat fucking face.”

“Do I want Biden to be president now? Not necessarily. But Biden is the only Democrat who beat Trump in Ohio,” he said. “He’s like the cream of the crop. Nobody likes him, but he’s a go-to when he’s in trouble. I can’t figure people out, but they just like Joe. Maybe it’s the familiarity. He’s like McDonald’s when you’re in Europe.”

“Fatigue is the best thing we have. Most Americans aren’t tired of winning, they’re tired of looking at his fat fucking face!” Maher explained. “It’s hard to beat an incumbent president in a good economy. Every incumbent since FDR has won if they’ve avoided a recession before an election year and consumer confidence is very high. … The voters that Democrats need to win, the moderates who are tired of Trump, will vote against a good economy, I think, just to get back to normal, but they won’t trade it for left-wing extremism.”

The video then goes off-topic, but the good news is that the left will likely tune out the rational parts of his special commentary and focus on the anti-Trump parts, which is not a plan to defeat the president. This is just a stand-up comedian. And no, moderate voters tired of Trump are not going to burn the economic prosperity that flows to their families to get back to normal — whatever that means. This is liberal bubble nonsense. It’s the kind of self-confidence that the left embodied that led to its loss of the Rust Belt. Polls are not a good indicator of this presidency. It’s too burdened by nuance. Some voters may not like Trump personally but agree with him on policy. I think Trump’s popularity is higher — and the people who lost the 2016 election so epically are right now because they won the 2018 midterms, right? Slow down. Trump may not be the ideal Republican candidate, but he is pushing an agenda that conservative Republicans have been pushing for decades. Democrats have decided to move further left, towards psycho-ville — and they have no intention of changing that. Democrats are now the party that takes pleasure in making it easier to kill children. They criticize the police. They want to tax us with death — all because they feel that’s true. The GOP is pushing policies that have led to the lowest unemployment rate across the board, raised wages, created more than three million jobs, and driven consumer and compact business confidence to their highest levels in years. For now, that’s not a hard decision for voters.
