Trump has an idea after shootings that could turn tragedy into something ‘large’

President Trump said the victims of the weekend shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, cannot die in vain and suggested that Democrats and Republicans join forces on background checks and immigration reform to ensure something positive comes from the attacks.

“We cannot allow those killed in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio to die in vain. And neither can those so seriously injured,” he tweeted. “We can never forget them, nor the many who came before them. Republicans and Democrats need to come together and pass strong background checks, perhaps pairing this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. We need to have something good, if not BIG, come out of these two tragic events!”

He also placed some blame on the media, saying “fake news” had deepened divisions in the country.

“The media has a huge responsibility for life and safety in our country,” he said. “Fake news has contributed greatly to the anger and rage that has been building for many years. News coverage needs to start being fair, balanced and unbiased, or these terrible problems will only get worse!”

On Saturday, a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, killing 20 people and wounding dozens more. Less than a day later, another mass shooting occurred in Dayton, killing at least nine people and wounding at least 27.

President Trump is scheduled to speak at the White House at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.
