Tom Zawistowski, president of the We the People convention, conducted a poll for the closely watched U.S. Senate race in Ohio between incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Republican candidate Bernie Moreno. The poll found the race to be “absolutely close.”
Zawistowski said he surveyed 273 people randomly selected from a telephone database over two days earlier this week, asking respondents about the U.S. Senate and presidential elections, as well as the general direction of developments in the country.
“In the Senate race, after Sherrod Brown spent almost $45 million on television in June, July and August, the race is tied. Brown has 46.5 percent, Moreno has 46.5 percent. It’s very tight, very even,” Zawistowski said.
Brown, who has served in the U.S. Senate since 2007, has booked $43 million in ads since April, according to a report by Politico, while Moreno recently booked $25 million in ads ahead of the Nov. 5 general election.
As for the country’s direction of development, Zawistowski said most survey respondents believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.
“In our survey, 61 percent of respondents said we were heading in the wrong direction, 32.5 percent said we were heading in the right direction and 6.5 percent were unsure,” Zawistowski said.
When it comes to the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, Zawistowski said Trump still leads Harris; however, they noted that the gap has narrowed by several points from Trump’s nearly 15-point lead when incumbent President Joe Biden was the Democratic nominee.
“Right now in the presidential race here in Ohio, President Trump is winning 51.5 percent, Harris is winning 42 percent. So that’s a difference of 9.5, 10 percent, Kennedy is at 3 percent, and 3.5 percent are undecided. That number doesn’t surprise me, but I would say that before Harris was their candidate, Trump probably would have won Ohio by 15 percent, so that was a slight erosion,” Zawistowski explained.
