Mass Exodus from Blue States to Red States

Democrats claim their policies are better than Republicans, but they keep leaving their blue states and moving to red states. Democrats are known for taking huge urban areas and turning them blue, then leaving them because they become inconvenient to move to better territory in red states, where they do the same thing. They raise taxes and regulations, making life pricey and irritating wherever they come to power.

According to United Van Lines, the 10 states with the most residents departure include the blue states of Wisconsin, Ohio, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. Only three red states made the list; Kentucky, Utah, and Kansas.

The top 10 states where people move most often are red states: Idaho, South Dakota, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Nevada, and Colorado (the latter two are purple). Only three states with a sturdy blue hue made the list: Vermont, Oregon, and Washington. In 2017, Vermont he slippedand its inbound and outbound movement becomes more or less equal. Interestingly, all three states were much more moderate, only turning blue in the last 25 years. Longtime residents of Washington and Oregon regularly complain about Californians taking over their states and turning them blue. People in Vermont complain about Democrats from Massachusetts and New York moving to their state. The bluer those three states become, the fewer people will move there, as we are already seeing in Vermont.

Last week CBS in San Francisco reported that the number of people leaving the Bay Area has reached its highest level in more than a decade. High housing costs topped the list of reasons for moving. Democrats are more reluctant than Republicans to issue building permits and impose additional regulations on them.

Except for Houston, according to Red FinThe nine cities that people leave the most are in blue states. In addition to San Francisco, they include New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Houston, Detroit, Dayton, and Milwaukee. Los Angeles has the worst traffic in the world, and San Francisco isn’t far behind. Democrats like to spend transportation dollars on public transit and HOV lanes instead of relieving traffic congestion by building more lanes.

Most of the 10 cities people are moving to are in red states. They include Phoenix, Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, Tampa and Miami. The others are San Diego, Sacramento, Boston and Las Vegas, which is in a purple state.

Moving companies survey movers to find out why. Economic opportunity is a gigantic reason. United Van Lines found that 60 percent of Midwest respondents move to find modern employment or change jobs. Michael Stoll, an economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles, says The two main reasons people move are lower housing costs and greater job growth.

Retiring in a better state is also a popular reason for moving. United Van Lines found that 17 percent of Midwest movers cited a different retirement destination.

Conservative American Legislative Exchange Council ranks states by their economic performance. Many of the states people move to are ranked at the top. Seven are red, and one is purple. Many of the most common states people move from are clustered at the bottom of the list. The bottom 10 includes Ohio, New Jersey, Illinois, Connecticut and Wisconsin.

People are leaving Los Angeles en masse, and blue California was classified last state in the nation for business for 12 years in a row, according to Chief Executive magazine’s annual CEO survey of Best and Worst States for Business. Red Texas has held the top spot for the past 12 years. One CEO complained in the study, “States like California just don’t get it. At the rate they’re going, who’s going to pay the bills with such an anti-business, left-wing government and companies leaving for Arizona and Washington every month?” California has the highest state income tax in the nation. The study also found that the 10 worst states are not right-to-work states, but most of the top 10 are.

The reason California as a whole isn’t in the top ten states people move to is probably because the weather is a key reason people move. Similarly, the reason red Arizona isn’t in the top ten states people move to is because it’s so warm there.

Democrats will point to a handful of blue states and cities that are still popular places to move as evidence that their policies aren’t all bad. But they are in the minority, and the tide is turning against them. Soon, the only blue areas people will flock to will be the ones Democrats recently turned blue. Democrats can talk the talk, but actions speak louder than words.
