It doesn’t take much to make liberals lose their chilly or their wits. All you have to do is disagree with them politically and then you’ll hide. But this week our friends on the left have been more than a little crazy, which is worth noting.
The release of the memo by the Republican majority on the House Intelligence Committee must have put an end to their instability, because they have been on a mad gallop since Friday, unable or unwilling to stop.
First, the Democrats on the committee, after concluding that releasing the Republican memo would harm national security because it would reveal “the sources and methods” of intelligence gathering (it revealed none of them), are now poised to release their own memo—a supposedly 10-page defense of the government using partisan gossip spread by Russian government officials to spy on Americans. It will make for entertaining, if unedifying, reading.
The release of the Democratic memo was unanimously supported by the Intelligence Committee, while the Republican memo was not. No Democrat wanted the public to know what their administration was doing when the GOP was telling the story, but no Republican made an effort to stop the liberals from telling their side of the story. Weird, right?
Yes, some liberal journalists are complaining that the memos were not released at the same time, but they are lying to the public. There is a very specific process for releasing this type of information that requires time for various interested parties to have a chance to comment. The Democrats did not start the process for their memo until after they tried to block the Republican memo. So they, the Democrats, are responsible for delaying their memo, not the partisan actions of the Republicans. You won’t hear that on MSNBC or CNN.
Still, there have been reports of anger within the FBI in response to the release of the GOP memo. There are even reports that the anger “could cause spy agencies to share less information with Congress.” That’s the problem with the FBI — the arrogance that comes with unchecked power that thinks it is above responsibility.
If the FBI or any other intelligence agency refused to provide constitutional oversight of Congress, that agency would have to be gutted and eliminated. They would have to be replaced, they serve a valuable purpose when they follow the rules, but hindering oversight would make them a rogue agency that must be destroyed.
The top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, was exposed this week as being so desperate to find dirt on Donald Trump that he was willing to have his staff coordinate with a foreign government to get it. fell for the jokebut it is telling that he would do exactly what he accuses Trump of doing in order to “get” the president. The media mostly yawned at this hypocrisy.
Not to be outdone, the media picked up on a joke President Trump told in Ohio, calling it “treason” that Democrats did not applaud good economic news in the State of the Union address. It was clearly a joke in response to something someone in the crowd said.but you’d think he was calling for the execution of liberals, judging by the reaction to it. Of course, liberals have a pretty deep, recent history calling Republicans traitorsto the delight of (and in cooperation with) the media, but why let facts get in the way of honestly drawing conclusions?
Hysterically, even the alleged conservatives they took their fainting couches over the joke. Bill Kristol, who had a demanding time adjusting to no longer being relevant, said the joke was “shameful“and suggested to Congress criticize the president. It’s sorrowful to see people so desperate for the attention they once got for their ideas now demanding it with fits of anger. Hatred, it seems, is winning out over logic.
It was a week full of jokes, and the punch line came to us from Atlantic magazine. The solution they offer to conservative diehards is uncomplicated: Vote for DemocratsThe authors say they support many Republican policies but advocate abandoning them because, you guessed it, Trump.
It would be a great parody if it weren’t so true. But it will find an audience in Kristols and the other passengers in the “we are the real conservatives” clown who empties his contents on cable news every night. Their seething hatred of Trump, who has tarnished their importance, has overshadowed what they call their principles. The anger from Democrats is expected; from Republicans it is misplaced.
Does Trump say or tweet things that sometimes make me shake my head? Absolutely. But I know the real problem in Washington is Congress. Trump would sign almost anything put before him, but the “conservatives” in Congress aren’t putting anything before him. Not even the most benign things that could pass the Senate in an election year. If Bill Kristol wants to point fingers, maybe he should look in the mirror and at all the people in the backseat of his clown. They have the opportunity to do the things they’ve always said were their priorities, and instead they’re taking up their time campaigning against the one man who would gladly sign their priorities into law…if only Congress would send them to him. That’s probably the biggest joke of all.
