The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to support Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s petition to remove Mike Johnson.
Greene started the clock to vote on Johnson’s removal on Wednesday afternoon, giving the House two days to vote on her motion to leave office. However, it was passed by a 359-43 vote from both parties, according to C-SPAN. Eleven Republicans, including Greene, supported the vote against its submission.
The vote comes after Greene met with Johnson and her other supporter, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie two days this week. This is the second attempt to remove a House Speaker in seven months, after the House removed former Speaker Kevin McCarthy end of last year.
The move comes after Greene presented Johnson with certain demands aimed at avoiding a vote, which included a promise not to give any more aid to Ukraine and a pledge to only bring bills to the floor that have the support of a majority of Republicans in the House House of Representatives and imposing 1 percent budget cuts across all agencies if no agreement is reached on fiscal year 2025 spending by September 30.
Greene previously claimed that “the ball is in Mike Johnson’s court” after two games on Monday and Tuesday. Massie, however, encouraged Johnson to make a quick decision on whether to comply with the duo’s demands as they have no intention of leaving.
So far, only Massie and Arizona Republican Paul Gosar have expressed support for Greene’s efforts to unseat Johnson. However, Ohio GOP Rep. Warren Davidson said he would vote against the proposal. The threat to Speaker Johnson’s position came after he garnered enough support to pass three major foreign aid bills that were passed with Democratic assist.
