It’s ‘treason’ if Cruz doesn’t endorse Trump during convention speech

Newt Gingrich spoke with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren live from Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on the first day of the RNC convention Monday night. They began their conversation by addressing the controversy over who is and who is not at the convention as the Republican Party prepares to crown Donald Trump its 2016 nominee.

At least one speaker, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), has not yet endorsed the GOP candidate. Susteren asked Gingrich if he believes the former Trump opponent will finally announce his support for Trump during his speech Wednesday night.

“Well, I hope” he supports him, Gingrich said.

What if not?

“I think it will be sad,” Gingrich said. “It will be a betrayal.”

With Cruz poised to return to the Senate, Gingrich argued it would be in Cruz’s best interest to be on warm terms with Trump.

“He knows that being here is helpful to Trump,” he said. “At the same time, he’s coming back to the Senate. This is a significant step in that direction.”

As for Ohio Gov. John Kasich and his staff, who declined to attend this week’s convention, Gingrich said they “seem to be in their own world.”
