Harris promoted paper ballots ahead of 2020 election, but now Democrats oppose election integrity

by Natalia Mittelstadt

Vice President Kamala Harris promoted the operate of paper ballots in elections when she last ran for president, but Democrats and the Biden administration have since staunchly opposed election integrity laws pushed by Republicans.

Five years ago, Harris led a bipartisan effort to encourage the operate of paper ballots. But since the 2020 presidential election, Democrats have called Republicans “election deniers” for promoting such election integrity measures, and the Biden administration has focused on suing states over election integrity laws.

In February 2019, during the presidential primary campaign, Harris spoke at the New Hampshire Policy Institute at Saint Anselm College, where she shared her thoughts on infrastructure financing.

She mentioned that under the Obama administration, the Department of Homeland Security designated elections as “critical infrastructure.”

After Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, she said she joined Senator James Lankford, Republican of Oklahoma, on Bill which would assist fund election infrastructure for paper ballots.

“We proposed that part of the infrastructure investment should be earmarked for upgrading the states’ infrastructure around elections.” Harris said“Because guess what? It turns out that despite everything technology has given us, good and bad, the best and most secure way to conduct elections? Paper ballots.”

“Because that’s how I say it, a bit jokingly, “Russia can’t cut a piece of paper” Harris continued.

Harris is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination again this year after President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race on Sunday. Neither the White House nor Harris’ campaign responded to requests for comment.

Since the 2020 presidential election, which former President Donald Trump claims was rigged against him through voter fraud, the former president has repeatedly called for the election to be held using paper ballots.

In DecemberTrump said that if he returns to the White House, “we will also organize our elections so that we move to paper ballots.” A month before the 2022 midterm elections. Trump said “Only news, no noise”“ TV show: “We should go to paper ballots like they did in France. Thirty-six million people voted and there were no disputes. Everyone had paper ballots and the voting took one day. They didn’t keep them in the corner there and you can see the boxes sliding all over the place.”

The country “should go to same-day voting. They should go to paper ballots. And you would have an election that everyone could be proud of. Because right now this country is a laughing stock around the world. They’re laughing at our stupid elections.” he added.

Concerns about the vulnerability of voting machines to attacks have led to calls for the introduction of paper ballots.

In June 2022, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) admitted that Dominion voting machines were vulnerable to hacking.

CISA published a report detailing nine vulnerabilities in Dominion’s Democracy Suite ImageCast X voting system, most of which involve the ability to “install malicious code” on computers.

In the report, CISA Director Jen Easterly emphasized: fasting in Case X, no evidence that Dominion’s system vulnerabilities were exploited for nefarious purposes. “While these risks should be mitigated as quickly as possible, we have no evidence that they were exploited in any election,” She wrote.

Democrats have opposed Trump’s calls to implement measures to preserve the integrity of the election.

In March this year Harris joins Attorney General Merrick Garland at a church in Selma, Alabama, where he said he would fight state laws that are “discriminatory, burdensome, and pose unnecessary restrictions on voting access, including those related to absentee voting, the use of drop boxes, and voter ID requirements.”

“These measures include practices and procedures that make it harder to vote; changes to electoral district maps that disadvantage minorities; and changes to election administration that weaken the authority of locally elected or nonpartisan election administrators.” Garland said“Such measures threaten the foundations of our system of government.”

Democrats have repeatedly called Republicans “election deniers” to implement measures to ensure the integrity of elections, such as preventing foreigners cannot vote.

However, Phil Kline, Amistad project director, said: Only news on Monday that Democrats had been “complaining” about voting machines ahead of the 2020 presidential election. “After the passage of the Help America Vote Act,” which allowed for “widespread use of the machines, there’s been bipartisan concern” about them, Kline said.

“There is so much evidence of machine intrusion that paper ballots are clearly the better option,” he added.

Kline also said he was “not surprised by Harris’ change of heart, as the Biden administration is using federal funds and agencies to encourage people to vote, and is also combining that with private money and talent to create a government-backed effort to increase Democratic turnout.”

Former Kansas Attorney General Was Referring to ‘Bidenbucks,’ as Critics Call Biden Executive Order 14019 which he signed in March 2021.

According to Implementing Regulation“The head of each agency should evaluate ways the agency can, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law, promote voter registration and voter participation,” including “engaging and facilitating approved, nonpartisan outside organizations and government officials to provide voter registration services at agency locations.”
