A Southern California school district has filed a lawsuit against Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) over a new law he signed that prohibits schools from notifying parents when their children begin their gender “transition.”
How Fox News reports that the lawsuit was filed by Chino Valley Unified School District, which is represented by the Liberty Justice Center (LJC). The lawsuit claims that the new law, which was signed on Mondayviolates the constitutional rights of parents.
“PK-12 students, most of whom are too young to drive, vote or medically consent to their own gender, are also too young to make life-changing decisions about their expressed gender identity without their parents’ knowledge,” Emily Rae, senior legal counsel at LJC, said in a statement. “But that is exactly what AB 1955 enables, with potentially devastating consequences for children who are too young to fully understand them.”
“School officials have no right to keep secrets from parents, but parents have a constitutional right to know what their minor children are doing at school,” Rae (pictured above) continued. “Parents are the legal guardians of their children, not Governor Newsom.”
A spokeswoman for Newsome’s office issued a statement ridiculing the lawsuit and vowing to fight it.
“This is a deeply frivolous lawsuit, clearly designed to fan the flames of the dumpster fire formerly known as Twitter rather than to bring to light legitimate legal claims,” spokeswoman Izzy Gardon said. “AB 1955 preserves the parent-child relationship, California law ensures that minors cannot legally change their name or gender without parental consent, and parents continue to have guaranteed and full access to their students’ educational records under federal law. We are confident the state will win this case quickly.”
The law was developed by a group of far-left, pro-transgender lobbyists in response to several school districts in the state passing policies requiring staff to notify parents if their children decide to change their so-called “gender identity.” The backlash against the law was swift, with billionaire Elon Musk announcing he would move SpaceX’s headquarters from California because of the law to Texas instead.
“This is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it that targeted families and businesses alike, SpaceX will now move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas,” Musk said in a post on his website X, formerly known as Twitter.
