More than two-thirds of Americans and 54% of Democratic voters believe US President Joe Biden should withdraw from the election race that will decide the next US president in November.
His re-election bid against Republican Donald Trump has drawn edged criticism from the public, his own party and the media, according to a poll released Thursday.
ABC News / Washington Post poll found that only 30% of voters believe Biden should remain in the race at age 81. Doubts grew after the June 27 presidential debate, which once again cast doubt on his mental fitness and ability to serve a second four-year term.
According to the poll, only 42% of Democratic primary voters believe Biden should remain in the race, while more than 70% of independent voters, a requirement to win the White House, believe the president should drop out of the race and cede his seat to Vice President Kamala (*67*).
The poll also shows that nationally, support for Biden and Trump remains at 46%, while in a hypothetical showdown between (*67*) and Trump, the current vice president would receive 49% of the vote and Trump 47%.
The survey was conducted between July 5 and July 9 among more than 2,400 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 2%.
The poll was conducted a day after actor George Clooney published an editorial in New York Times where after reaffirming that he is a “Democrat through and through,” he shared his views on Biden’s chances in the upcoming presidential election, titled: I love Joe Biden. But we need a up-to-date candidate .”
