Christine posted about it earlier today and now it’s official. Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich has dropped out of the race less than 24 hours after Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) dropped out following a devastating loss to billionaire Donald Trump in yesterday’s Indiana primary.
Kasich thanked his wife, Karen, who he said has endured and underscored his political career. He also thanked his volunteers, whom he described as an “incredible” group of 800 people who were there for him in New Hampshire, Michigan and South Carolina.
“They were believers… I can never thank them enough,” he said. Kasich added that his mother always said, “Never forget the volunteers, Johnny.”

The governor then shared anecdotes about his presidential campaign, the people he met along the way and the people of New Hampshire he said he would never forget. He especially thanked the people of Ohio for giving him the chance to lead the Buckeye State. He described his term as governor and his presidential campaign as the greatest professional experience of his life and made sure to tell every voter he met how great Ohio was doing.
Kasich then turned to what the country needs to do. He said we know we need to cut taxes on individuals and businesses, and we need to have a realistic path to balancing the budget. He called for a balanced budget amendment. He also said politicians need to work to do the right thing, ignore the polls and “overcome the fear of re-election.” As he said on the campaign trail, Kasich also noted that we need to give power, money and influence back to the people; it’s time for America to start governing from the bottom up again.
He concluded, “as I suspend my campaign today, I have renewed faith, a deeper faith, that the Lord will show me the way forward and fulfill my life’s purpose. Thank you and God bless.”
