House Republican announces he will step down next month

Ohio State Rep. Steve Stivers announced Monday that he will retire in May to take a novel position with the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.

“For the past decade, I have had the honor and privilege of serving the people of Ohio’s 15th Congressional District. Throughout my career, I have worked to promote policies that move our economy forward, put people to work and improve our budget. okay,” the Republican lawmaker wrote on Twitter.

“I am happy to announce that I will be taking advantage of a new opportunity that will allow me to continue doing this,” he continued. “Effective May 16, I will leave Congress to accept the position of President and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.”

With Ohio Sen. Rob Portman retiring, Stivers was “preparing” to run in the Senate primary next year.

Stivers was considered a more moderate alternative to the current list of Republican candidates vying for the title of the most pro-Trump candidate. Stivers’ decision came after he raised nearly $1.4 million in the first weeks of 2021.

Ultimately, Stivers decided not to get into another political fight. Former Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel, former Ohio Republican Party leader Jane Timken, Cleveland car dealer Bernie Moreno and businessman Mike Gibbons are among the candidates in the crowded GOP primary. (Cincinnati.com)

“The best part of this job is making a positive difference in the lives of constituents,” Stivers said. “I am grateful to the residents of #OH15 for trusting me to represent them in the halls of Congress; it has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”
