Can Democrats even believe what they claim about guns?

You have to wonder if Democrats know anything about gun control laws they vote. This includes something as elementary as the recent vote on gun stabilizers.

Under the Biden administration’s novel regulations, gun owners with handgun stabilizers must now remove the device, register it and pay a fee, or have it forfeited or destroyed. The House voted to repeal these provisions by a 219-210 votes, including two Democrats who voted for the measure and two Republicans who voted against it. However, Senate Democrats rejected the move on a straight party line 50-49 votes. Even Democrats from high gun states like Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.)I voted to repeal the regulation.

There were stabilizing orthoses originally designed enabling veterans with hand disabilities to hold handguns, not enabling mass shooters to commit crimes more effectively. Harnesses are straps that allow a disabled person to hold a firearm in the event of recoil. Without weapons and a steady target, people with disabilities are very vulnerable to attacks by criminals. But Democrats will never mention it.

But you’d never know it. A week ago, President Biden explained that when “you put a gun on a brace, it turns into a gun.” Of course, a gun is a gun. How about his claim that the brace “makes it where you can have a higher caliber gun – a larger caliber bullet coming out of that gun”? Of course, if you’re concerned about recoil, why not just operate a rifle – heavier guns dampen recoil, and rifles weigh more.

But while it’s uncomplicated to dismiss Biden as not knowing what he’s talking about, you have to wonder if others are deliberately misleading people. Take, for example, two statements made during Thursday’s Senate debate by the top two Senate Democrats, Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY). No one worries that either of them has dementia.

“We all know this because ammunition magazines that can be attached to so many guns become automatic weapons similar to the AK-47,” Durbin said. “Harness guns have a solid reputation in modern America, even though they have been formally outlawed and regulated for almost 90 years.”

“If you’ve ever seen a gunman shooting something that looks like a machine gun with one hand, that’s what pistol harnesses allow,” Schumer says.

The notion that adding a belt to a gun can turn a semi-automatic pistol into a machine gun is absurd. A semi-automatic weapon fires one bullet per trigger pull. Fully automatic machine guns used by the military fire as long as the trigger is pressed. They have completely different firing mechanisms and adding a belt to the weapon will not make any difference. It is therefore also irrelevant to say that they “were formally prohibited and proscribed and regulated for almost 90 years.” However, it is not obvious how weapons can be both banned and regulated at the same time.

However, one wonders whether Senator Durbin knows bullets that much guns fire. AK-47 rifles fire bullets much larger than regular pistol bullets. A few exorbitant specialty guns operate AK-47 bullets, but the weapon has never been used in mass public shootings. Only stabilizing braces were used two public mass shootings (Dayton, Ohio in 2019 and Boulder, Colorado in 2021), but there is no evidence that braces had any effect on these attacks.

Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) explained these issues to Democrats and failed to convince a single Democrat.

But if Democrats know that adding a brace to a semi-automatic pistol doesn’t turn it into a machine gun, why do they make such outlandish claims? Do they really believe voters are that gullible? Surprisingly, Democrats think they can cheat voters even in states like Montana and West Virginia.
