Louisiana becomes the first state to require public schools to follow the Ten Commandments

by Robert Schmad

Louisiana is set to become the first state to mandate the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms under a bill signed Wednesday by Louisiana’s Republican Gov. Jeff Landry, the Associated Press reports.

The Republican-led bill would require every classroom in the state’s public schools, from kindergarten through college, to display a poster-sized copy of the Ten Commandments. According to to AP. No public funds will be used to fund the mandate as the posters will be covered by donations.

“Interestingly, we don’t discuss this enough, our legal/justice system comes from the English system, but the system evolved from the Hebrew courts, from Biblical times, from the time of Moses” – Lawyer Marina Medvin he said on X, reacting to messages. “Although requiring knowledge of the Ten Commandments gives the impression of religious favoritism, our entire social and legal system is based on these commandments.”

According to the AP, the posters will be accompanied by a four-point statement providing context describing how the Ten Commandments “have been a significant part of American public education for nearly three centuries.”

Other states, such as Texas and Utah, have considered requiring similar displays in classrooms, according to the AP. But with legal challenges looming, Louisiana is so far the only state to take action in this direction.

There is precedent for such measures being successfully challenged in courts, the AP reported, in a 1980 Supreme Court case that found a similar law in Kentucky violated the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The mandate is expected to begin in 2025, according to the AP.
