Comment: Border security popular as most Americans support deportation and limiting asylum seeking at the border

by Manzanita Miller

Americans are fed up with the Open Borders program, with polls showing that the huge majority of Americans support deporting illegal immigrants and limiting the processing of asylum applications along the border. In other words, Americans now favor much stricter immigration policies than they did just a few years ago – including most independents, Latinos, and college-educated Americans.

The latest version of YouGov questionnaire shows that Americans would support a deportation program that deports all illegal immigrants by a significant margin of 24 points, or 62% to 38%. This represents a huge enhance in the percentage of Americans supporting deportation compared to just two months ago.

NPR/Marist vote in April found that Americans support deporting all undocumented immigrants by just three percentage points, 51% to 48%. Now Americans support deportation by 24 points.

Fox News analysis in February showed that nearly 7.3 million illegal immigrants had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border under President Joe Biden’s administration, a number larger than the population of most U.S. states. Americans are aware of the burden the migrant crisis is placing on the country and are increasingly supporting deportation efforts to curb illegal immigration.

While the poll shows a majority of Democrats (62 percent) oppose deporting all undocumented people, a full 38 percent support deportation. Independents support deporting all illegal immigrants by 20 points, 60% to 40%, and Republicans support deportation by 76 points, 88% to 12%.

Even college-educated Americans — who lean left and favor Biden — support deporting all illegal aliens by a 16-point margin, 58% to 42%. Latinos – another group for whom deportation may be viewed as controversial – also support deporting undocumented immigrants by a six-point margin (53% to 47%).

Likewise, as many as 70 percent of Americans say they support the recent executive order partially halting asylum processing at the U.S.-Mexico border, allowing U.S. immigration officials to quickly deport migrants trying to enter the U.S. illegally. The ordinance is supported by as many as 76 percent of Democrats and 71 percent of independents. Additionally, 69 percent of Latinos and 67 percent of college-educated voters support efforts to minimize migrant crossings.

These views are consistent with a January YouGov/CBS News poll that showed failing support for allowing illegal people to stay in the U.S., with a majority of Americans (57%) saying asylum seekers should either stay in Mexico and wait for a hearing , or be permanently deported.

Voters in the January poll also had a markedly negative view of the long-term impact of immigration on the country: 48% to 22% of the public said the influx of immigrants would make society worse in the long run.

These views appear to have intensified over the past five months, with the latest YouGov survey showing greater support for deportation. With a reckless and unsustainable open borders agenda that threatens civil society and national security, political elites have pushed Americans to the brink. Even left-wing groups, including many Democrats and college-educated voters, express deep dissatisfaction with Biden’s border crisis and a desire to deport undocumented immigrants.
