Moments after being taken from the U.S. Capitol following a violation on January 6, 2021, then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was captured on video declaring that “I take responsibility” for not having a better security plan for the complicated on that fateful day. according to material released on Monday by House GOP investigators.
“We have a responsibility, Terri,” Pelosi can be heard saying in the recording to her chief of staff, Terri McCullough. “We took no responsibility for what happened there, but we should have. This is ridiculous.”
Pelosi also said: “You’re going to ask me – in the middle of this whole thing, when they’ve already violated the inauguration rules – ‘should we call the Capitol Police, I mean the National Guard?’ Why wasn’t the National Guard there from the beginning?”
McCullough, replied as the speaker’s SUV drove through the underground parking lot, “They thought they had enough…resources.”
Pelosi responded, visibly frustrated: “No, it’s not a matter of how they… don’t know. They clearly didn’t know. I take responsibility for not just telling them to prepare for more.
Pelosi seemed to be referring to congressional leaders, and McCullough seemed to be referring to the Capitol Police.

The footage was recorded by Pelosi’s daughter, Alexandra, who helped HBO make a documentary about the January 6 riots. However, the video did not air in its entirety until Monday, when Republicans on the House Administration Oversight Subcommittee released it after obtaining it from a television network.
Pelosi’s reaction to the Capitol riot in the video was as follows – Politico reported on Sunday.. However, some of the key quotes above were not included by the website that independently reviewed the footage.
“Multiple independent fact-checkers have confirmed that Speaker Pelosi did not plan her own assassination. Selected clips taken out of context do not change this. Three years later, House Republicans are still trying to whitewash January 6th. It’s shameful, unpatriotic and pathetic,” Pelosi’s spokesman said Only News.
But House Republicans said the footage undercuts the three-year-old Democratic-led narrative that former President Donald Trump and his supporters were solely responsible for Jan. 6 and its failures.
“Pelosi’s J6 Select Committee spent taxpayer dollars going after false political narratives and using Hollywood producers for their ‘investigations,’” said subcommittee Chairman Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., in a social media post on X. “Her admission of responsibility directly contradicts their own narrative.”
