Republicans lose both houses of the Virginia Legislature

While Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) sought full control at the state level in Virginia, Democrats ultimately retained control of the state Senate and Republicans lost control of the House of Delegates. The calls were made overdue Tuesday night, resulting in significant losses for Republicans in this key off-year election.

Democrats won such victories despite Youngkin’s high acceptance ratings and President Joe Biden’s low level of support in the commonwealth. Youngkin was considered one of the most popular governors in the country, by Morning Consult.

As Jazz Shaw pointed out in our sister state Hot Air: “What went wrong in Virginia? One word“The Democrats held an election on abortion. This was certainly the case in Virginia, where Youngkin hoped that Republicans would take control and pass a common-sense law that would restrict abortions at 15 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions. This modest approach was seen as consensus and majority Virginians AND Americans support such protection of unborn life.

Virginia Democrats didn’t just fight against child protection was born alive from abortion i mobilize a state amendment that would allow abortion up to birth without restrictions. As Townhall discussed at length ahead of the 2023 election, Democrats have misrepresented the issue of abortion by claiming that their Republican opponents support a blanket ban on abortion and criminalizing women for the abortions they have.

This hyper-focus has also played out in elections across the country, and especially since the overthrow of the U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade With Dobbs v. Jackson decision. Although pro-abortion Democrats and the Biden administration do involved in fearmongering and even lying on this issue nonetheless motivates voters who fear the Republican Party will ban abortion.

DNC, Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC)and even Biden himself, all mentioned abortion in their statements, with which the president clearly mentioned pro-abortion amendment passed in Ohio.

As for Tuesday’s races overall, Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report suggested that “political engagement” and “turnout” were down in Virginia, as well as in Kentucky and Mississippi. Both Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Republican Gov. Tate Reeves of Mississippi won re-election.

As of Wednesday morning, The New York Times. it’s currently showing Democrats control 21 seats and Republicans control 18 seats in the state Senate. In the House of Delegates, Democrats have 51 seats and Republicans have 47 seats. Later Wednesday, Spirit of Virginia PAC Chairman Dave Rexrode posted a thread partially sharing the view that Republicans would have 49 seats in the House of Delegates and 19 seats in the state Senate, effectively a one-seat advantage.

When it comes to the particularly noteworthy race between Democrat Susanna Gibson and Republican Mike Owen, the latter has the edge and has claimed victory. Gibson made headlines when it was revealed that she had participated in sex acts posted on Chaturbate and may have committed voter fraud.
