WASHINGTON – A growing number of Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives are pushing for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after another fatal shooting of an American citizen by federal immigration officials in Minneapolis this month.
At least 164 members – more than three quarters All House Democrats, 213 in all, supported the impeachment resolution against Noem on Tuesday afternoon, according to the office of Illinois Rep. Robin Kelly, who authored the decision.
“Kristi Noem should be fired immediately or we will begin impeachment proceedings in the House. We can do it the easy way or the hard way,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark and Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar said in a statement Tuesday.
Kelly three articles of impeachment against Noem accuse the secretary of obstruction of Congress, breach of public trust and self-interest. The resolution was adopted after the fatal shooting on January 7 37-year-old Renee Good by a federal agent in Minneapolis.
Following this decision, Democrats’ calls for Noem’s impeachment became even louder federal agents fatally shot Alex Pretti, 37, in Minneapolis on January 24.
President Donald Trump’s administration has reacted sharply to immigration enforcement tactics and appeared to soften its rhetoric after the shooting.
Republicans control the U.S. House of Representatives with a slim majority of 218 members.
In a statement shared with States Newsroom on Tuesday, Tricia McLaughlin, the department’s assistant secretary for public affairs, said, “DHS enforces the laws Congress passes, period,” adding that “if some members don’t like those laws, it’s literally their job to change them.”
“While (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officers struggle with a staggering 1,300% increase in attacks, too many politicians would rather defend criminals and attack the men and women who enforce our laws, and have done nothing while Joe Biden facilitated the invasion of our country by tens of millions of illegal aliens,” McLaughlin said. “It is time for them to focus on protecting the American people, which is the work this department does every day under Secretary Noem’s leadership.”
