The Republican-led Ohio Redistricting Commission on Friday adopted a novel congressional map that is expected to aid the GOP in the 2026 midterm elections.
Redrawn congressional districts will aid Republicans win two House seats next year, She reported to the Associated Press. The GOP currently holds 10 of Ohio’s 15 congressional seats.
The state constitution required redistricting because current districts were adopted without bipartisan support after the 2020 U.S. Census. The redistricting comes after President Trump pushed for Republican-led states to redraw their congressional maps to aid the GOP win more seats.
GOP-led states that have already redrawn their congressional districts include Texas, Missouri and North Carolina.
Democrats are trying to counter Republican redistricting, and California voters will go to the polls on Tuesday to decide whether to redraw congressional maps. Virginia lawmakers passed a constitutional amendment to redraw the state’s congressional map.
Governor Glenn Youngkin came out against last week’s plan.
“Two-thirds of Virginians spoke loud and clear when they codified nonpartisan redistricting in our state constitution five years ago. 12 days before our statewide election, this is a shameless, reprehensible grab of political power by Democratic lawmakers desperate for anything to distract attention from the disastrous Democratic shutdown and Jay Jones’ deranged comments and criminal investigation,” he said.
Additionally, Gov. Mike Braun called a special session in Indiana this week to reposition the state’s congressional maps.
Democrats are currently just three seats away from winning control of the House of Representatives in next year’s elections.
