More than 100 pro-life groups urge Republican lawmakers not to bow to Democrats’ demands on abortion

by Misty Severi

A coalition of more than 100 pro-life groups sent a letter to Republican members of Congress on Wednesday praising them for not acceding to Democrats’ demands to include an extension of health care subsidies as a condition for reopening the government.

Groups to argue(*100*) that Obamacare subsidies, which have been a central issue for Democrats in the fight over government funding, have allowed for a bypass Hyde Amendment of 1976(*100*) which banned the operate of federal funds for elective abortions.

The letter said any funding for Obamacare was “forced taxpayer funding of abortion” unless it specified that it excluded elective abortions.

The letter also argued that the abortion section of the Affordable Care Act, viz hundreds(*100*) parties, argues that the funds are appropriated by the Treasury Department rather than from the Labor, Health and Human Services Spending Act, thereby bypassing the Hyde Amendment, which is renewed annually as an appendix to the spending bill.

Only News reached out to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office for comment but did not receive a response by press time. Senate Democrats demanded an extension of grants that expire at the end of the year in exchange for a vote for a budget solution that would allow the government to reopen.

The federal government was close(*100*) from October 1, after the Senate failed to adopt a resolution that would have provided the government with funding until November 21. The House passed its version of the resolution last month.

The coalition urged lawmakers to remain staunchly opposed to extending Obamacare subsidies, which were expanded as a result of the Biden administration’s Covid-19 policies.

“We are grateful that Republicans continue to vigorously oppose Democrats’ demands for massive spending to continue the resolution — particularly funding for Obamacare subsidies that cover abortion plans,” the group wrote in a letter first shared Only News.

“As pro-life leaders, we urge you to speak up and unequivocally oppose any consideration of extending Covid-19-era subsidies without Hyde protections,” they concluded. “A pro-life Congress cannot be a party to Obama’s abortion funding program.”

A total of 105 groups signed the letter, including Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, Advancing American Freedom and the Faith & Freedom Coalition.

“Democrats won’t let the government shut down to protect the biggest expansion of taxpayer-funded abortion since Roe v. Wade – Obamacare,” SBA President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement shared Only News. “The more Washington funds abortion, the more unborn children lose their lives and the more mothers are harmed. A pro-life Congress must not continue the Obama-Biden legacy of taxpayer-funded abortion that ends the lives of countless innocent children.”
