The Democratic National Committee plans to nominate President Joe Biden virtually ahead of the party’s convention amid an impasse in the Ohio Legislature over a bill that would allow him to run in the November election.
The Democratic National Convention, where the party usually chooses its candidate, will be held Aug. 19-22. However, Deadline in Ohio Political parties have 90 days to confirm their candidate before the general elections, which will take place on August 7 this year.
On Tuesday, DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison announced that the party would hold a virtual roll call to ensure Biden’s presence on the ballot in all 50 states. Hill reported.
“Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio and all 50 states, and Ohio Republicans agree,” Harrison said. “But when the time came to act, time and time again, no action was taken, so the Democrats will land this plane themselves.”
“Through the virtual roll call, we will ensure that Republicans cannot undermine our democracy through incompetence or partisan ploys, and Ohioans can exercise their right to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice,” he continued.
In an attempt to ensure Biden’s presence in the November election, both the Ohio House and Senate introduced separate bills to make the deadline for candidate certification more adaptable, but the latter included a ban on foreign funds for state voting purposes campaigns, This was reported on NBC News. The House adjourned the session, without considering either its own bill or the Senate’s bill.
Last week, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) warned state Democratic Party that Biden will not appear on the ballot in the November election unless the party’s nomination date is changed in accordance with state law.
On Thursday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) called a special session General Assembly to adopt legislation to ensure Biden’s presence in the November general election. The extraordinary session began on Tuesday.
Alabama had a similar problem with its ballot access deadline, and earlier this month the Republican-led state Legislature passed a bill ensuring Biden would be on the state’s ballot, which the governor signed into law.
Washington state also had an issue with the voting deadline, but told the DNC it could be resolved if the party submitted its provisional certificate of nomination by August 20, She reported to ABC News.
