This article has been updated to include a statement from the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC).
Tuesday is not only the primaries of the Republican and Democratic Parties in New Hampshire, in which Donald Trump and President Joe Biden won, although the latter did so through an election campaign. There was also a statewide special election in which Republicans won in Coos County. The Republican Party in the 6th District even turned a blue seat into a red one.
Sean Durkin was elected in Northumberland and Mike Murphy was elected in Gorham, As reported by the NH daily, which would give Republicans a 200-195 majority in the state House of Representatives. It was Murphy who flipped the seat, defeating former state Republican Edith Tucker.
The NH Journal highlighted how members of the Republican Party cited the DNC’s decision to upend the primary election by holding South Carolina’s first primary election, which won’t be held until February 3. The state of New Hampshire has decided to proceed and hold the January 23 primary regardless, especially in compliance with state law. As mentioned in the report:
Rep. Ross Berry (Manchester), who serves as vice chairman of the House Republican Committee, admitted that the GOP victories went to its opponent.
“I want to thank President Joe Biden and his complete disregard for our first-in-the-nation primary for these two victories. “In Granite Staters, House Democrats knelt before Biden during an embarrassing election campaign,” Berry said. “Maybe next time they will choose New Hampshire over the DNC. But then again, probably not.
The GOP victory, especially its sweep, is certainly an embarrassment for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), especially since announced last month “spotlight marking” for both races. “Breaking the GOP trifecta in New Hampshire is the DLCC’s top priority,” the announcement even noted. “Both the New Hampshire House of Representatives and Senate are on the DLCC target map in 2024, and we are taking every opportunity to build Democratic power and ultimately flip both chambers.”
Instead, New Hampshire Republicans are expanding their majority in the House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) has identified New Hampshire as a target state for defending control of both houses of the state legislature, as outlined in note from 2024 this week.
“The DLCC put a huge spotlight on New Hampshire in 2024 and it came straight out of the gate. This is a great sign that we will defend the GOP majority in the Granite State in November,” an RSLC spokesman Stephanie Rivera said in a statement.
The DLCC issued a statement to Townhall expressing concern about the timing, noting that “[t]Last night, a special election in New Hampshire was held specifically on the day of the Republican primary to boost GOP turnout and steal a seat. “Republicans should be concerned that they almost lost even though there were 206,000 more voters in the primary last night.” The statement also expressed optimism for 2024. “We are on track to break the Republican trifecta in New Hampshire in November. New Hampshire remains a top DLCC target in 2024.” – he continued.
Additional goals for the RSLC include “Defending Republican Strongholds” not only in New Hampshire, but also in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin.
“The math is simple. They exist 33 seats This will determine control over the nation. Republicans must rotate 7 places By 3 states regain control of 60 state legislatures while Democrats must rotate 33 places By 5 states have a simple majority of state legislative houses,” they explained regarding 2024 goals.
RSLC also wants to regain majorities in Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, according to the memo.
