The senators argued that the reason for the State Department’s interference was ongoing negotiations related to the Iran nuclear deal that the Obama administration signed in 2015.
Republican sense. Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson presented evidence Wednesday that former Secretary of State John Kerry’s State Department “actively interfered” with the FBI’s attempts to arrest people suspected of being in the United States illegally in support of Iran’s efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction.
The whistleblowers allegedly notified senators and provided them with unclassified documents supporting their claims and showed that the Justice Department and the FBI “failed to take the necessary steps to stop Kerry’s obstructive efforts against law enforcement.”
The senators argued that the reason for the State Department’s interference was ongoing negotiations related to the Iran nuclear deal that the Obama administration signed in 2015.
“Records provided to our offices demonstrate that the Obama/Biden Administration’s Department of State under John Kerry actively and persistently interfered with FBI operations involving the lawful arrests of known terrorists, members of Iranian proliferation networks, and other criminals providing material in support of Iran. nuclear and ballistic missile programs” – senators – wrote in letters to the Departments of State and Justiceand the FBI. “The documents also show that Justice Department and FBI leadership apparently allowed it to happen until the Trump administration reversed course.”
The senators also claimed that these actions occurred as the Obama-Biden administration tried to publicly demonstrate that it opposes Iran acquiring nuclear weapons by imposing sanctions on “Iranian individuals, companies and organizations for their involvement in nuclear proliferation, ballistic missile development, support for terrorist groups and human rights violations.”
The letters also outlined eight examples of situations in which the Justice Department or the FBI could have taken further steps to arrest suspected Iran supporters but chose not to do so. One of the suspects was on a “terrorism watch list” and the other had returned to Iran. Two suspects were ultimately arrested after former President Donald Trump’s State Department lifted the block.
Grassley and Johnson are now asking for archived emails from Kerry, CIA Director Bill Burns, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman to be sent by June 4.
