House Republicans officially begin the investigation into several main cities of the Sanctuary, which have a policy limiting cooperation between local and immigration and customs enforcement authorities (ICE).
Supervision and Government Committee Monday was announced Investigation of Boston, Chicago, Denver and New York in relation to the impact of their provisions regarding sanctuaries on public security and federal immigration enforcement. The chairman of the James Comer committee, a Republican from Kentucky, delivered letters to each mayor, asking for relevant documents and communication to their rules of the sanctuary, and called them to testify before his committee.
“The Committee for Supervision and Government Reforms is investigating the jurisdictions of the Sanctuary in the United States and their impact on public security and the effectiveness of federal efforts to enforce the United States immigration regulations,” said Comer. “Jurisdictions in the sanctuary and their obstacle policy introduced by them hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to perform safe arrests and remove dangerous criminals from American communities, which makes Americans less safe.”
The investigation in the Chamber is a consequence of a novel investigative unit as part of the Trump administration against the jurisdiction of the sanctuary and promises across the border of Tom Homan in order to refer to the prosecution of anyone who is illegal, which illegal illegal migrant.
Comer letters – delivered to the mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson, mayor of Boston Michelle Wu, mayor Denver Mike Johnston and the mayor of New York Eric Adams – ask for the mayors to transfer the mayors for internal communication and documentation related to their policy of the city of Sanctuary until February 10, ask them to testify before the committee on February 11.
The investigation is being investigated creation Working group for the enforcement of cities of the Sanctuary in the Department of Justice. The mission of the working group is the identification of state and local regulations or politicians, which are “inconsistent” with federal immigration initiatives and, if necessary, questioning these provisions in court.
Homan – which conducts deportation operations of the Trump administration – Previously said Daily Caller News Foundation that he will be responsible for those who consciously hide and live an illegal migrant from ice.
“Now these cities of the sanctuary cannot help – ok, fine. They can withdraw, that’s good, but they can’t cross this line – said Homan. “If they cross this line, we will ask the lawyer’s office to consider prosecution.”
Although there is no official definition of the policy or law of the “sanctuary”, the label generally describes any principle that limits local officials from aid or otherwise cooperating with federal immigration bodies. While officials are and local are not largely obliged to get involved in federal immigration matters, Trump’s administration warned that a glaring obstacle is contrary to the law.
Shortly after Trump won the presidential election in 2024 he voted An attempt to withdraw strict politics. Legislators from Boston also voted with confirmation of the status of the sanctuary in the city shortly after Trump’s victory.
While Johnston initially suggested that he would place the police on poviat lines to prevent ice agents from entering Denver and said that he would be ready to be sentenced to his opposition to the immigration program of Trump, he has appeared since then more open to the idea work with ice in terms of illegal migrants with stern criminal stories.
Meanwhile, Adams has consistently called About New York, city officials to cooperate with ice, but claims that he is handicapped by the city’s law.
It is not immediately clear how four mayors cooperate to investigate at home. None of the mayors was able to immediately respond to a comment from DCNF.
