COMMENT: Republicans need to throw a wrench into Dems’ plan to slow down Trump nominees

Bryan Leib and Gavin Wax

Senate unanimous 99-0 confirmation Marco Rubio as Secretary of State was a scarce moment of unity and bipartisanship. For many Americans, this has given us hope It would be President Donald Trump’s Cabinet and Senate confirmation nominees who would receive a fair and balanced process.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like this will happen. The real battle to get the cabinet and other appointment confirmations he deserves is just beginning. Democrats, led by obstacles like Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, are here maneuvering delay votes for other key nominations. This obstruction is a direct attempt to undermine the administration’s progress and stall.

Murphy’s tactics are part of a larger strategy – tie up the confirmation process, tie up the Senate and prevent key officials from taking up their positions. It’s not about vetting nominees; It’s about sabotaging the government’s ability to function.

Any delay leaves America vulnerable, whether in foreign policy, national security or economic policy. A lack of leadership in critical positions leads to uncertainty, mismanagement and inefficiency at every level of government. Foreign adversaries are closely watching these delays, viewing them as opportunities to take advantage of American inaction.

The Constitution gives the president the power to make appointments when the Senate is inactive. Murphy’s recent actions are the tip of the iceberg. Now is the time to decisively apply this authority.

If Democrats refuse to allow the votes, the administration must bypass them. Every moment will waste America’s enemies and weaken our institutions. The country cannot afford to play long political games while pressing for issues – from national security to economic stability – and immediate attention.

I’m sure there are those who will argue that halftime meetings are a radical measure, but they are not. What’s radical is that Democrats are playing now. Recess appointments are a constitutional tool that presidents of both parties have used in the face of a Senate obstruction. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and even Barack Obama exercised this authority.

Republicans must recognize that playing by the elderly rules in a novel era of democratic obstruction is a losing strategy. The time to act is now. If Republicans allow Democrats to dictate the pace of government nominations, they are effectively handing control of the functionality of the executive branch to a partisan minority.

If the Senate is not doing its job because of senators like Murphy, the president must ensure that the executive branch can continue to function. The consequences of inaction are too sedate. Agencies responsible for border security, military readiness, economic policy, and law enforcement require effective leadership. Leaving these departments in limbo is not only neglectful – it is an abolition of duty.

It’s not just about personnel – it’s about whether the elected government can carry out the will of the American people. Every agency left without a leader, every court left without a judge, every embassy without an ambassador, and every defense meeting halted plays into the hands of those who want the administration to fail.

The American people did not vote for paralysis; They voted for action. If no meetings are concluded, it sets a precedent that future Democratic-led Senates will apply even more aggressively.

The time for patience has passed. Rubio’s confirmation showed what happens when Democrats have no choice but to cooperate. But this was an anomaly, not the norm.

We cannot allow further delays to undermine Trump and the mandate that has been handed down by the American people.

These meetings must happen – immediately. Republicans must stand firm and apply every tool at their disposal to make sure the government remains functional and effective. The alternative – adopting an endless grid lock – is simply unacceptable.

Trump and his team have unveiled an All-Star Team of Bilis for the Cabinet, agencies and ambassadors to be confirmed immediately. If Democrats are going to delay this process, force our nominations to hand, and a pause is imperative to the continuity of our nation, at home and abroad.
