Author and venture capitalist JD Vance defeated Josh Mandel, Matt Dolan, Mike Gibbons and Jane Timken on Tuesday to win the Ohio Republican primary after a hotly contested campaign.
The GOP candidates’ battle to replace retiring GOP Sen. Rob Portman has drawn powerful players from across the Republican Party — most notably former President Donald Trump, who endorsed Vance, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who endorsed Mandel, and Sen. Rand Paul (R- KY) who endorsed Gibbons – share their endorsement. It was a swift and furious race that had its moments… cluttered.

As Guy noted earlier Tuesday, as polls opened across Ohio, the contest to determine the GOP nominee for the U.S. Senate was not only vital because retaining the seat is key to the GOP’s goal of taking control of the Senate in November, but also a key test for Donald Trump and his influence on Republican policy.
In the final weeks of the contest – and after Trump’s endorsement – Vance more than doubled his support between March and April, according to a Fox News poll, from a third-place 11% to a first-place 23%.
In less than six months, the Hillbilly Elegy author will face the winner of the Democratic primary and incumbent U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan in the November general election.
