This week, Russia banned the so-called “gender-affirming” surgeries and treatments intended for people who believe their “gender identity” is not consistent with their biological sex.
According to a report from New York Timesthe law prohibits transgender people from undergoing surgery, hormone treatments and changes to official documents such as passports. Additionally, the law invalidates a marriage if a spouse decides to “change gender” and does not allow couples with a transgender person to adopt children.
According to reports, the bill was passed by both the upper and lower houses of the Russian parliament. The only exception to this law is medical interventions to treat congenital defects.
“When the law comes into force, the consequences will be severe because transgender people will be denied the right to medical care, which is constitutionally guaranteed,” said the first “transgender” politician, Yulia Alyoshina, in an interview with a Russian daily. CNN.
In the United States, many states have passed laws banning these types of procedures and treatments for children. Leftist organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have come out against this type of legislation.
Last week, Ohio State Sen. J.D. Vance, a Republican, introduced legislation that would ban these types of experimental, irreversible treatments and surgeries.
Vance, known as the “Children’s Innocence Protection Act.” was introduced by Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) in the House of Representatives. The law makes it a Class C felony for any person who knowingly provides hormone therapy, puberty-blocking drugs, or irreversible gender reassignment surgery to a minor. This would result in a prison sentence of 10 to 25 years and a fine of up to $250,000. Additionally, higher education institutions have been banned from teaching this type of “health care.”
