The Senate supports the Laken Riley Act with bipartisan support, setting the final vote

by Ben Whedon

On Thursday, the Senate voted to advance the Laken Riley Act above a critical procedural threshold, clearing the way for a final vote on the bill.

The upper house approved by a vote of 84 to 9, with the immense majority of Senate Democrats voting in favor, Hill reported. The House of Representatives passed the bill earlier this week, meaning it could reach the president’s desk before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

If passed, the bill would require the detention of illegal immigrants accused of a range of crimes. The bill is named after a deceased University of Georgia student who was murdered last year by Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant who faced life in prison.

The vote in the House was seen 48 Democrats joined Republicans to adopt the bill by a majority of 264 to 159 votes.
