During Tuesday’s news conference, President-elect Donald Trump announced his plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”
Trump said during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, that the bay’s potential new name is “beautiful” and “appropriate” as Mexico continues to allow “millions” of illegal immigrants to enter the U.S. through southern border. The president-elect called Mexico a “very dangerous place” that is ultimately “ruled by cartels” and threatened the nation with the economic consequences of the border crisis.
“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf, which has a beautiful ring and covers a lot of territory,” Trump said. “American Gulf, what a beautiful and apt name. This is the right thing to do, and Mexico must stop allowing millions of people to flow into our country; they can stop them and we will impose very serious tariffs on Mexico and Canada.”
After Trump’s announcement, Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene announced on X that she would introduce legislation to change the name of the bay.
“President Trump’s second term is off to a GREAT start. I will introduce legislation as soon as possible to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!” Greene said.

Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all products from Mexico and Canada if their governments did not meet his demands, and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo held meetings with the president-elect on the matter. In response, Canada did so prepared strengthen immigration enforcement by hiring more staff and increasing resources if there is a risk of a surge in immigration as a result of a Trump victory.
The president-elect has suggested merging Canada with the US, following Trudeau’s lead resignation Monday.
