On Tuesday, the House adopted “Laken Riley Act” on a bipartisan vote of 264–159.
The bill received bipartisan support – 48 Democrats and 216 Republicans voted for it.
The Senate is expected to vote on it later this week.
The bill gives law enforcement greater powers to detain illegal immigrants accused of theft-related crimes.
Earlier this year, Georgia nursing student Laken Riley was murdered by Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant lifer without the possibility of parole.
The legislation was sponsored by Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga.
“I promised the Laken family that I would fight for this bill just like they fought for their lives,” Collins wrote on X before the vote. “Let’s settle this.”
